PREP ROUNDUP: Alpena girls soccer team sets new record for wins
SAULT STE. MARIE–Seven different players scored for the Alpena High girls soccer team on Monday during a record-setting 8-1 over Sault Ste. Marie.
Kennedy Kaiser scored twice and Alpena (12-8-3, 3-3-2 Big North Conference) got single tallies from Mollie Girard, Macy Dickinson, Jenna Leeck, Taylor Tolsdorf, Anna Young and Cassidy Beach.
The win gives Alpena a new single-season record for wins and Beach’s goal gives every Alpena field player at least one goal this season.
Alpena hosts Cadillac on Tuesday.
SOFTBALL
Onaway routs Pellston
PELLSTON–Calley Selke threw a perfect game, Kennedy Crawford threw a no-hitter and the Onaway softball team hit six home runs during a doubleheader sweep of Pellston on Monday 15-0 and 11-0.
Selke struck out 13 batters during her perfect game in the nightcap. At the plate, she was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, an RBI and a run scored.
Kayla Metty was 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double, three RBI and three runs scored; Crawford was 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored; Kyli Brewbaker was 1-for-2 with a run scored; Taylor Larson was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored and Brittany Buczkowski was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
In the opener, Crawford struck out nine in four innings. At the plate, she was 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs, three RBI and three runs scored.
Metty was 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored; Selke was 2-for-4 with two runs scored; Buczkowski was 2-for-3 with a home run with two RBI and two runs scored; Jillian Chaskey was 1-for-2 with two runs scored; Larson was 1-for-3 with an RBI and two RBI and Brewbaker was 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored.
The Cardinals faced a tough slate on Saturday, going 1-2 during a tournament in Petoskey.
In their opening game, the Cardinals defeated Negaunee without registering a hit.
The only run came in the first inning when Selke was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Jordan Larson, who was also hit by a pitch.
Selke earned the win, allowing two hits and a walk with nine strikeouts.
In its second game, Onaway felt 2-1 to Detroit Country Day. Onaway led 1-0 in the sixth inning before Country Day rallied with a two-run home run with two outs.
Crawford had a hit and an RBI for Onaway and allowed one earned run on five hits with one walk and six strikeouts.
Onaway ended the day with a 6-3 loss to Lake Orion.
Crawford was 3-for-4 with a triple and three runs scored; Breya Domke was 2-for-2 with a double; Metty was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI; Selke was 1-for-2 with an RBI; Chaskey was 1-for-2 and Buczkowski was 1-for-3.
Onaway is 17-4 overall and 10-0 in Ski Valley Conference play. The Cardinals play at Central Lake on Thursday.
Mio defeats Atlanta
ATLANTA–The Atlanta softball team lost a pair of games to Mio on Monday, 5-1 and 12-8.
Cherokee Cunningham had a pair of singles for Atlanta and Hailee Brown and Jayda Richter each had a hit.
Atlanta plays at Au Gres on Thursday.
BASEBALL
Mio sweeps Atlanta
ATLANTA–The Atlanta baseball team had a rough day on Monday, losing to Mio 14-2 and 11-1 in a doubleheader.
In the opener, Justin Lee took the loss for Atlanta and Matt Myers took the loss for the Huskies in the nightcap.
At the plate, Lee was 2-for-4 on the day, Lee was 2-for-4 and Aaron Cuzzort had two hits.
Atlanta plays at Au Gres on Thursday.
