Local hoopsters honored by Freep

Several local boys basketball players recently were honored by the Detroit Free Press after the paper announced its all-state basketball teams earlier this week.

Alpena’s Chris DeRocher earned the highest nod after he was named to the Division 1 third team.

DeRocher–the two-time All-Alpena News Player of the Year–became Alpena’s all-time leading scorer this season and finished his career with 1,624 points. He earned an all-state honorable mention from the Associated Press and was an all-Big North Conference first team selection.

DeRocher led the area in scoring at 22.9 points per game.

Oscoda players Owen Franklin and Brayden Mallak both earned honorable mentions in Division 3.

Franklin averaged 14.5 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game. He earned all-North Star League honors and set new Oscoda records for three-pointers in a season (57) and career three-pointers (86).

Mallak averaged 13.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4 assists for the Owls.

Rogers City’s Ethan Hincka also earned a Division 3 honorable mention. Hincka led Rogers City with 14 points and 7 rebounds per game.

Division 4 honorable mentions from the Free Press were earned by Mio’s Drew Hess, Onaway’s Kevin Pearson, Hillman’s Kory Henigan and Posen’s Jared Sharpe.

Hess also earned an honorable mention from the AP. Hess earned all-NSL honors and averaged 20.6 points per game.

Sharpe was an all-NSL selection who also averaged 20.6 points per game. He also averaged 5.9 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 3.7 steals per game. Sharpe also became the 11th Posen boys basketball player to reach 1,000 career points.

Henigan was an all-NSL choice, who averaged 18.7 points, 10.2 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game.

Pearson averaged 15.3 points and 4.3 steals for the Cardinals.
