The Alpena 10U baseball team did its best work under pressure on Friday.

Alpena cruised past Macomb Clinton 13-1 in four innings during the opening day of the 2017 Cal Ripken Michigan State Tournament. Alpena was helped by an 11-run second inning during which it scored 10 runs with two outs.

Alpena finished the day with two wins as it defeated Howard Township 10-1 in the 10U opener.

After a quiet first inning, Alpena’s offense awoke in the second inning. Michael Kreis tied the game 1-1 on a failed tag attempt at home and Garrett Hamp had an RBI single to give Alpena the lead for good.

Alpena batted around in the second inning as player after player came up with a big hit. Connor Cameron had an RBI single, Jon Rensberry had an RBI double, Bryce Moe had a two-run double and Owen Kinzey had an RBI double among Alpena’s hits.

Beginning with Rensberry’s double, Alpena plated 10 runs with two outs, coming up with more than enough hits and using a pair of infield errors to score two additional runs.

Cameron, Kreis and Moe combined to pitch Alpena to the win and Alpena’s defense made several solid plays to keep Macomb off the board. Macomb stranded a runner on second in the bottom of the second inning and hit into a double play to to end the third inning. Macomb then went 1-2-3 in the fourth inning.

Macomb’s lone run came in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI triple by John Lonsway.

Alpena will finish pool play with two games today. Alpena will play L’Anse Creuse at 2 p.m. and will play Rosedale at 6 p.m.
