Wildcats top Chiefs to earn ninth victory

CHEBOYGAN–The Alpena girls soccer team played a close game against Cheboygan on Monday, ultimately winning 2-1. It was Alpena’s ninth win of the season, the second-most in program history.

Alpena scored first in the first half on a goal by Mollie Girard, assisted by Emma Kelley. Cheboygan tied the game shortly before the half.

Midway through the second half, Alpena’s Kourtney Jones scored a goal, with an assisst by Girard.

Madyson Girard was the winning goalie and made seven saves.

“We were very shorthanded tonight, with only fourteen players filling different roles than they would normally do. They all made great contributions and were pieces of the puzzle. I’m very proud of the girls,” Alpena coach Tim Storch said.

Alpena (9-11-1) plays against Traverse City West in Traverse City on Tuesday.

SOFTBALL

Hillman takes two from Au Gres

AU GRES — The Hillman softball team experienced much of the same in Monday’s doubleheader sweep of Au Gres.

Two more victories and another no hitter from Vanessa Schook.

Schook shut out the Wolverines as she walked just two batters and struck out seven and was backed by plenty of offense as the Tigers won the first game of the day, 15-0 in three innings.

Offensively, Andrea Taratuta led the way going 3-for-3 with two doubles and a home run. Lyndsey Ryba was 3-for-4 with a double, Morgan Armon went 2-for-3, Morgan Dove was 2-for-2, Brooke Jones went 2-for-2 and Jozie Appelgren, Eve LaFleche and Schook all added a double.

The Tigers won the nightcap, 13-6.

Dove picked up the win as she allowed six runs on five hits, while walking two and striking out five.

At the plate, Armon went 3-for-3, LaFleche and Jones were both 3-for-4 with two doubles apiece and Ryba was 2-for-4 with a double.

Alcona sweeps Atlanta

ATLANTA–The Atlanta softball team faced two tough losses in a doubleheader against Alcona on Monday. Atlanta lost the opener 18-8 and the nightcap 22-2.

Atlanta’s Chace Hooper had six at-bats and four singles for the night.

“We had some great improvement in the first game. The girls played well, this was probably the best I’ve seen them play all season,” Atlanta coach Lisa Marlatt said. “Desi Cahoon had some really nice catches in the outfield.”

Atlanta plays in Owendale on Thursday and will play in a district game against Hillman in Hillman on May 30.

BOYS GOLF

Wildcats finish second at Traverse City

TRAVERSE CITY — The theme of the week continues to be the wind as it has been rough on golfers around Michigan.

The Alpena golf team had to battle tough winds again Monday as the Wildcats competed at Traverse City Central on Monday as they competed against Traverse City Central, Traverse City West, Big Rapids, Frankfort, Kingsley, Leland, Mt. Pleasant, Ogemaw-Heights, Pentwater, Shelby, Suttons Bay and Gaylord.

Despite the wind, Alpena senior Zach Ross came in third with a score of 77.

As a team, Alpena continued its solid play and finished second, finishing one stroke behind Gaylord as the Wildcats finished the day with a score of 343.

BASEBALL

Pitching pushes Hillman past Au Gres

AU GRES–The Hillman baseball team dominated in a doubleheader against Au Gres on Monday, winning the opener 9-1 and the nightcap 8-1.

In the opener, Hillman’s Kyle Moir pitched all six innings, striking out seven batters and walking just three. Moir was 2-for-3 with a double, triple, two runs scored and five RBI; Caine Hunt was 3-for-4 with a run scored.

Jared Juergens pitched the nightcap for Hillman, striking out six and allowing one walk. Juergens was 2-for-4 with two runs scored; Moir was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI; Wyatt Barrie was 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Hillman’s wins bring its record to 22-8 overall and 15-3 in the North Star League.

Alcona takes twinbill from Atlanta

ATLANTA–The Alcona baseball team won both games in a doubleheader against Atlanta on Monday. Alcona won the opener 19-2 and the nightcap 5-0.

Jacob McFadden was the winning pitcher for Alcona in the opener. Jake Gallagher was 2-for-3; Erik Davey was 2-for-4 and Matt Krisan was 2-for-4.

In the nightcap, Davey and Brock Franklin shared the pitching duties. Alex Stephenson was 2-for-3.

“We definitely put the ball in play in the first game (and) we scored a lot of runs; defensively we made some plays,” Alcona coach Terry Franklin said.

Alcona (18-8, 12-4 North Star League) plays on Wednesday in Posen.
