Alpena boys finish second at BC Western Invitational

AUBURN–The Alpena boys track team had an impressive showing on Friday at the Bay City Western Invitational, finishing second out of 14 teams.

Alpena finished with 188 points, behind Bay City Western (198) and ahead of Frankenmuth (164), Midland Dow (151) and Midland (128) among other teams.

“It was extremely windy out, but we persevered. The guys did very well and there were lots of PRs and gutsy performances,” Alpena boys track coach Bob Bennett said. “We as a coaching staff are very proud of them.”

Mitchell Day and Alec LeTourneau each had a first place finish for Alpena. Day won the 3,200 run (9:32.61) and LeTourneau won the pole vault (12-1).

Other top finishers for Alpena included: Wade Roznowski in the 100 dash (5th, 11.55); Jadon Duncan in the 400 dash (7th, 54.53); Josh Smith in the 800 run (6th, 2:02.76); Aden Smith(5th, 4:36) and Aidan Day (7th, 4:48.65) in the 1,600 run; Aden Smith (3rd, 9:52.81) and Josh Smith (7th, 10:16.25) in the 3,200 run; Hayden Goebel in the 300 hurdles (4th, 43.23); the quartet of Roznowski, Alex Arch, Hunter Kline-Tolsdorph and Levi Goebel in the 400 relay (4th, 45.81) and 800 relay (1:35.98); the 1,600 relay team of Duncan, Kline-Tolsdorph, Levi Goebel and Hayden Goebel (4th, 3:38.93); the 3,200 relay team of Aden Smith, Josh Smith, Aidan Day and Mitchell Day (2nd, 8:15.47); Trevor Roznowski in the shot put (8th, 42-8) and discus (3rd, 141-3); Randy Udell in the discus (4th, 140-0) and Gabe Bullis (2nd, 12-0) and Josiah Matuzak (5th, 9-6).

The Alpena girls team finished in sixth place with 105 points, behind Bay City Western (209), Frankenmuth (151), Grand Blanc (148), Midland (138) and Midland Dow (114).

Faith Weide and Maddie Voltz each won for Alpena with Weide winning the shot put (36-5 1/2) and Voltz winning the high jump (4-10).

Other top finishers for Alpena were: Maddy Boyd in the 1,600 run (4th, 5:29.50); Taylor Foster in the 100 hurdles (5th, 16.97); the 3,200 relay team of Boyd, Molly Dickenson, Kaylee Rondeau and Destiney Wirgau (7th, 11:18.37); Dakota Prevo in the shot put (2nd, 35-5) and discus (3rd, 101-5) and Katie Mack in the high jump (2nd, 4-8.5).

Alpena hosts Traverse City West on Wednesday.

GIRLS TENNIS

Alpena finishes fourth in Petoskey quad

PETOSKEY–The Alpena girls tennis team played in a quad Friday with Petoskey, Harbor Springs and Traverse City St. Francis and finished in fourth place.

Alpena’s two doubles team of Breann Kieliszewski and Taylor Belanger took second in their flight. Yuka Yamano at three singles also took second in her flight. Kate Schultz at two singles, Catherine Sharp/ Emily Kozlowski at one doubles and Emeline Hanna and Claire Butch at four doubles took third.

Alpena earned seven points total on the day, which is a seven-point improvement on last year’s performance according to Alpena tennis coach Charlie Giordano.

“I’m extremely proud of the team for their work and support of each other,” Giordano said.  

SOFTBALL

Tigers make quick work of Hale

HILLMAN — The Hillman softball team remained unbeated on Thursday as they made quick work of Hale, sweeping the Eagles 15-0 in both games.

Vanessa Schook tossed a no-hitter in game one and struck out six.

At the plate, Schook and Morgan Armon each went 2-for-3 with a double. Jozie Appelgren went 2-for-3 and Morgan Dove was 2-for-2.

Dove picked up the win in the nightcap, pitching all four innings and struck out seven batters.

Offensively, Armon went a perfect 3-for-3, Schook was 2-for-3 with a double and Alison Samp belted a home run.

The Tigers improve to 14-0 on the year.
