Hillman extends winning streak to 12

HILLMAN–The Hillman girls basketball team dominated against Whittemore-Prescott on Thursday 65-32 for its 12th straight win.

Hillman gained the lead early on and was up 24-3 after the first quarter. Hillman extended the lead to 46-10 at the half and 58-13 after three quarters.

Hillman’s leading scorers were Vanessa Schook with 16 points and Lyndsey Ryba with 13.

“We got off to a really good start, and had a lot of energy,” Hillman coach John Kuzewski said. “We continued the lead with a lot of pressure. It was one of the most complete first halves of the season.”

Hillman (12-1, 10-0 North Star League) plays Monday in Mio.

Posen 41, Hale 38

HALE–The Posen girls basketball team won against Hale on Thursday, 41-38.

Posen was able to get the lead early in the first quarter, 6-0. At the half, Posen still led by six 19-13. Posen and Hale were tied at the end of the third quarter 28-28, but Posen ultimately secured the win.

Posen’s leading scorer for the night was Cami LaTulip with 18 points.

“Hale has been playing people tough in their home gym,” Posen coach Karl Momrik said. “I’m happy we were able to hang on for the win.”

Posen’s junior varsity team also won Thursday, 17-14.

Posen (5-9) plays Monday in Atlanta.

Fairview 48,

Au Gres 31

AU GRES–A fast start propelled the Fairview girls basketball team to victory on Thursday as the Eagles toppled Au Gres 48-31.

Fairview (9-5) opened the game on a 20-10 run and led 26-12 at halftime to give itself enough of a cushion for the in the second half.

“We started off hot and I think we won every quarter but one,” Fairview coach Marc Winton said. “We had a little lull in the second half, but so did they so it turned into a defensive standoff.”

Au Gres outscored Fairview 9-7 in the third quarter, but Fairview held a 15-10 advantage over the last eight minutes.

Jenna DesJarlis led Fairview with 15 points and Alyson Winton and Andrea Ford also reached double figures with 14 and 11 points respectively.

Gina Dewald led Au Gres with 24 points.

Fairview hosts Charlton Heston on Tuesday.

Alcona 43, Mio 34

MIO–The Alcona girls basketball team overcame a so-so offensive night and turned up its defensive efforts to beat Mio 43-34 on Thursday.

Taylor Livingston led Alcona with 14 points and Brittany Decker added 12. Megan Grove chipped in with six.

“Our offensive execution was not consistent tonight but we held them scoreless in the first and third quarters. Give Mio credit,  they kept coming back,” Alcona coach Mark Feldhiser said.

Lauren Kuffel led Mio with 10 points.

Alcona’s JV won 48 -27 behind 13 points from Bri Fogle and nine points from Hailee Gordy. 

Oscoda 40, Mio 26

MIO — The Mio girls basketball team was on the receiving end of a 40-26 defeat to Oscoda on Tuesday.

The Thunderbolts were led by Lauren Kuffel who scored 10 points. Emily Mangutz added six points and six rebounds. Claudia Wilson chipped in with four rebounds and Karley Auten collected three steals in the losing effort.

“Missed free throws and turnovers were tow main factors that hurt us tonight,” Mio coach Cindy Thomey said.
