Alpena sweeps Boyne City in regular season finale

The Alpena baseball team wrapped up its regular season with a doubleheader sweep of Boyne City on Tuesday.

The Wildcats took game one by a score of 8-3. Rhett McDonald started and pitched all six innings to pick up the win. McDonald allowed three runs on six hits and struck out four.

At the plate, Joe Ayala went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Nick Skiba delivered a huge two-out bases loaded double in the second inning to give the Wildcats the lead. Skiba was 2-for-3 with four RBI in the game. Ben Matteson had a double and scored two runs.

Alpena went onto mercy Boyne City in the nightcap by a final score of 12-2 in five innings. Dylan Tucker, Ben Budnik and Cam DeCaire all saw action on the mound and combined for six strikeouts and allowed just four hits.

Brendan Dacey led the way collecting three hits. Josh Lucas and Matteson each had two hits apiece in the win.

Alpena will travel to Traverse City Central on Saturday where they will take on Traverse City West in the first round of district play.

“It was nice to get everyone some playing time tonight. We’re back on a good roll and we’re looking forward to the matchup against Traverse City West on Saturday,” Alpena coach Phil Schultz said.

Tigers win predistrict game against Atlanta

HILLMAN – The Hillman baseball team mercied Atlanta in six innings on Tuesday in a Division 4 predistrict game.

The Tigers got a solid effort from starting pitcher Kyler Moir who tossed a complete game in earning the win. Moir gave up three unearned runs on three hits and struck out seven batters.

Offensively, Moir went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Jared Juergens was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Andrew Funk went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Caine Hunt collected an RBI. Nic Taratuta tripled and Brent Kenyon had an RBI triple.

The Tigers advance to play Rogers City in a district semifinal matchup on Saturday. The two teams split two regular season matchups earlier in the year.

“Rogers City has a deep lineup. We split during the regular season and it’s going to be a good game. We like what we have on the mound and we’re going to continue to give our best effort and hopefully come away with a win,” Hillman coach Rick Firman said.

Posen tops Joburg in predistrict game

HILLMAN-The Posen baseball team got off to a winning start in the postseason, topping Johannesburg-Lewiston 5-3 in a predistrict game on Tuesday.

Travis Sharpe went the distance for Posen, allowing three runs on three hits with three walks and 13 strikeouts in seven innings.

Sharpe led off the game with a home run on the first pitch and Posen scored three times in its first turn at the plate. Sharpe finished 3-for-3 with two RBI.

Skyler Tulgetske was 2-for-3 and Matt Delekta was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Posen will play Onaway on Saturday in a district semifinal in Hillman.

“We’re playing some great baseball and it was a great win for us,” Posen coach Pat Kowalski said. “We’re looking forward to playing Onaway on Saturday.

Alcona wins predistrict game

AU GRES-The Alcona boys baseball team won a Division 4 predistrict game against Fairview on Tuesday 18-3.

Coda Gallagher pitched all four innnigs for Alcona. Nathan Swinson was 3-for-4 along with Eric Davey. Alec Stephenson was 2-for-3.

Alcona (19-11-1) plays on Friday at 10 a.m. against Hale in Au Gres.

SOFTBALL

Posen wins postseason opener

HILLMAN-The Posen softball team opened the postseason with a win on Tuesday, topping Johannesburg-Lewiston 6-5 in seven innings in a predistrict game.

Johannesburg and Posen were tied at the end of the first inning 3-3, and Johannesburg gained the lead 4-3 in the third. Posen caught up in the last inning, securing the win for the Vikings.

Jolene Reese pitched six innings and three batters of the seventh for Posen. She had three strikouts and four walks with only five hits and five runs, three of which were unearned. Jenna Hincka came to the mound in the seventh inning with the bases loaded. She walked two girls, but was able to strikeout three girls to end the game.

Hincka was the leading batter for Posen, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Lauren Romel was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Sam Lenard had a double and an RBI.

Posen plays on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Onaway in the district semifinals.

Hillman takes care of Atlanta in predistricts

HILLMAN – The Hillman softball team took care of business in a predistrict matchup against Atlanta on Tuesday, beating the Huskies by a final score of 16-0.

Vanessa Schook took the mound and earned the victory, tossing a complete game, striking out eight batters. Schook also helped her own cause at the plate, collecting three hits, including two triples and two RBI.

Morgan Dove had two hits and two RBI. Alison Samp collected two hits and an RBI. Jozie Appelgren and Morgan Armon each had two RBI apiece.

Eve LaFleche had a hit and an RBI and Olivia Smith also had a hit.

Hillman will be back in action on Saturday when it plays Rogers City in a district semifinal matchup.

“It should be a good game, we beat them once and they got us once during the regular season so it should be a good one,” Hillman coach Rich Price said.

Hurons take two from Petoskey

ROGERS CITY – The Rogers City softball team put an end to another solid regular season, sweeping a doubleheader against Petoskey on Tuesday.

The Hurons were tested in both games but came out victorious in dramatic finishes to both games. Rogers City took game one by a final score of 2-1 as both teams were held scoreless until Sarah Meredith and Hannah Fleming hit back-to-back home runs to give the Hurons a two run lead.

Rogers City was able to hold off the Northmen in the seventh to come away with a one run win.

Jayna Hance pitched all seven innings, allowing just three hits and striking out two on her way to picking up the win.

The nightcap was a higher scoring contest as the Hurons were forced to battle back and that’s exactly what they did.

Rogers City put together a come from behind victory to win game two by a score of 9-8.

The Hurons scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the one run lead on three consecutive hits. Megan Brege got the rally started with a single and Hannah Fleming delivered two RBI.

Offensively, the Hurons were led by Kayla Rabeau who had three hits, Hannah Fleming and Taylor Fleming each had two hits apiece and Brege, Hance and Meredith all had a hit.

Hannah Dittmar picked up the win on the mound.

Rogers City finishes the regular season with an overall record of 25-11 and will be in action on Saturday in Hillman to take on the Tigers in a district semifinal.
