Weather shortens night on the diamond for area teams

HILLMAN – The Hillman baseball team earned a victory over Rogers City on Thursday, winning by a score of 7-2.

Kyler Moir took the mound for Hillman and was sharp yet again tossing six innings, allowing three hits, two earned runs and struck out five, while picking up the win.

Offensively the Tigers were led by Dylan Steinke who went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Jared Juergens went 2-for-2 with a double and run scored. Bubba Banks was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Both Trenton Hopp and Kory Henigan each added a hit and an RBI to help lead Hillman to the victory.

Game two of the doubleheader was postponed due to rain and will be made up on a later date.

The Tigers are now 14-7 overall and 9-2 in league play.

Onaway splits with Hornets

PELLSTON – The Onaway baseball team split a doubleheader against Pellston on Thursday.

The Cardinals earned a 4-3 victory in extra innings in game one as they got a superb effort from starting pitcher Trevor Wregglesworth who went eight innings, allowed just two earned runs, scattered six hits and struck out six en route to picking up the win.

Gavin Fenstermaker went 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and a run scored. Derrick Wregglesworth went 2-for-2 with a run scored and Trevor Wregglesworth was 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI.

The Cardinals fell in game two by a final of 6-4. Fenstermaker had two RBI in the nightcap.

Onaway will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to take on Lake Leelanau St. Mary.

Posen 8, Atlanta 0

POSEN – Behind another dominating pitching performance by Travis Sharpe, the Posen baseball team took one game from Atlanta, winning by a score of 8-0.

Sharpe pitched five innings, allowed just three hits and fanned seven Huskies. At the plate Travis Sharpe went 1-for-2 with a double. Jared Sharpe was 2-for-3 with four RBI in the game. Avery Werth was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI. Matthew Deletka went 2-for-3.

Game two was suspended in the top half of the second inning with Posen up 5-0 and the game will be made up on a later date.

The Vikings are currently 9-9-1 overall and 7-5-1 in league play. Posen will be back in action on Monday against Au Gres.

Alcona 6, Oscoda 3

LINCOLN – The Alcona baseball team picked up a victory over Oscoda on Thursday, winning game one of a doubleheader by a score of 6-3.

Coda Gallagher started and struck out 11 batters on his way to earning the victory.

At the plate, Alex Stephenson was a perfect 3-for-3. Jake McFadden went 2-for-3.

The second game of the doubleheader was suspended due to weather and will be restarted on a date to be named later.

Alcona improves to 11-7-1 overall and will travel down to Fulton for a tournament on Saturday before playing host to Hillman in a big North Star League showdown on Monday.

SOFTBALL

Rogers City 12,

Hillman 8

HILLMAN – The Rogers City softball team was victorious in a high-scoring North Star League tilt on Thursday, defeating Hillman by a score of 12-8.

Jayna Hance started and picked up the win in game one. Offensively, Kayla Rabeau added three hits including a home run and three RBI. Taylor Fleming added a home run of her own and two RBI. Sarah Meredith collected three hits and had four RBI. Amanda Wirgau also chipped in with two hits to lead the Hurons to another big victory.

For Hillman, Vanessa Schook pitched the first four innings before being relieved by Kalen Tchorzynski. At the plate, Schook had a double, a home run and an RBI. Morgan Dove also had a double and an RBI. Morgan Armon picked up two hits and two RBI. Tchorzynski, Brooke Jones and Andrea Taratuta each had a hit in the game.

Rogers City improves to 14-7 overall and 10-1 in league play. The Hurons will host Atlanta on Monday.

Hillman will be back in action when the travel to Alcona on Monday.

Posen sweeps Atlanta

POSEN – The Posen softball team dominated a doubleheader on Thursday against Atlanta. The Vikings needed just three innings to win game one by a score of 23-3.

Jenna Hincka picked up the win, allowing two hits, one earned run and four strikeouts over three innings. At the plate, Hincka helped her own cause collected three RBI. Taylor Roznowski was a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI. Brooke Ciarkowski was also 2-for-2 with an RBI. Lindsey Romel continued the trend going 2-for-2 and Kayla Lenard had a double and four RBI.

The Vikings need just three innings again to defeat Atlanta in the nightcap, winning by a score of 16-1.

Hincka again picked up the win on the mound allowing just two hits, one earned run and struck out three. Lenard was 2-for-3 with four RBI capping off a huge night at the plate. Ciarkowski was a perfect 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI. Jolene Reese was 2-for-3 with two RBI and Cami LaTulip was also 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Posen is currently 8-12 overall and 8-4 in league play. The team will be back in action today for the Wozniak invitational.

Onaway sweeps

Pellston

PELLSTON – The Onaway softball team earned two big victories on Thursday in Pellston. Calley Selke pitched game one, leading the Cardinals to a 10-2 victory. Selke tossed six innings, allowed two earned runs, four hits and struck out 11 batters.

Selke also went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Alison LaFave was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Eelena Domke went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Kennedy Crawford pitched game two and was victorious in the Cardinals 13-1 win in the nightcap. Crawford tossed five innings and struck out two batters.

Jade Galer was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Kayla Metty was also 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Selkie capped off her big day going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI. Crawford helped her own cause going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI at the plate. Domke also went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

The Cardinals are now 14-6 overall and 8-2 in the Ski-Valley Conference. The team will be in action on Saturday for a tournament in Petoskey.

BOYS GOLF

Alpena takes third in Cheboygan

CHEBOYGAN – The Alpena golf team was in Cheboygan on Thursday and the team took third place on a day that saw a drastic temperature change and a lot of rain in the last hour of competition. Cheboygan won shooting a 327 at their home course. The Wildcats were 11 strokes behind with a team best 338.

“We broke our own team best again today and I could not be happier with how the kids played today,” Alpena coach Eric Mitchell said.

Evan LeTourneau medaled today shooting a team low 83. Zach Ross shot an 84, AJ Nowak shot an 85, Nate Cosbitt shot an 86. Both Tommy Hein and Brendan Hartman shot 87 apiece.

“Last year we would have done anything to shoot an 87 and to not use an 87 as a score this season is an amazing turnaround. I’m very proud of the kids and we’re looking forward to finishing the season strong,” Mitchell said.

Alpena will be at the Tribute in Gaylord on Saturday for another Big North Conference event.
