Onaway volleyball finishes 6-0 to win home tourney

ONAWAY-The Onaway volleyball team met one its goals for the season on Saturday as the Cardinals went 6-0 to win their annual Onaway Tournament.

In pool play, Onaway defeated Hillman (25-14, 25-21), Brimley (25-17, 25-10) and Mancelona (25-16, 25-13). The Cardinals then defeated Rudyard in the quarterfinals (25-18, 25-18) and got the better of Mancelona again in the semifinals (25-14, 25-7).

In the final, Onaway defeated Alcona 25-13, 25-19.

“We set one of goals this year to win our home tournament. The girls played really solid all day,” Onaway coach Steve Watson said. “There’s a lot of parity in this tournament and we got contributions from everyone (in our lineup).”

Taylor Ehrke led Onaway in nearly all categories and was named to the all-tournament team after finishing with 30 kills, 76 assists, eight blocks, 14 aces and 50 digs. Jade Galer had nine kills, nine assists, 11 aces and 56 digs and was also named to the all-tournament team.

Maddie McLean added 26 kills, 10 aces and 14 digs for Onaway and Vydailia Letts had 15 kills, 12 digs and eight blocks. Alison LaFave had 28 kills, six assists, seven aces and 26 digs and Noel Nash had 10 kills and nine digs.

Alcona began the day by splitting with Central Lake (16-25, 25-19) and Charlevoix (25-18, 21-25) before going on to beat Rudyard (25-16, 25-15), Hillman (25-18, 25-19) and Brimley (25-12, 19-25, 15-12).

Sydney Pierce had eight aces and 15 blocks for Alcona and Sierra Forsythe had eight aces and 31 kills. Sam Zerbst added 54 digs and Keilee Elmer had 133 assists.


Gaylord 3, Alcona 0

GAYLORD-The Alcona soccer team came out on the short end against Gaylord on Saturday, losing 3-0.

Connor McCoy made 21 saves for the Tigers (9-8-1) who trailed 2-0 at halftime and had some scoring opportunities along the way.

“It was a good quality game. We were in it most of the way and we had some chances; we hit the goal post a couple times. It was a good quality game for us,” Alcona coach Tim Munro said.

Alcona plays at Tawas on Thursday.
