ALPENA – The Alpena Wildcats volleyball team showed grit and determination on the court Thursday night, taking on the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils in a competitive matchup that stretched across four sets. Despite strong rallies and key individual performances, the Wildcats fell 3-1, with set scores of 19-25, 25-23, 21-25, and 18-25.

The opening set featured long rallies as both teams worked to establish momentum. Alpena’s communication was sharp early, with players making strong reads on whether balls were in or out. However, the Blue Devils managed to edge ahead, taking the set 25-19.

The second set brought out the Wildcats’ resilience. Strong serving from Lilly Rospierski kept Sault’s defense on its heels, while Kaila Girard’s powerful spikes added fire to Alpena’s attack. Emily VanHorn also came up with key bumps to keep difficult plays alive. Alpena held the lead for most of the set, though Sault briefly stole a one-point advantage near the end. The Wildcats regrouped, tying the score before closing it out with a thrilling 25-23 victory.

In the third set, Alpena came out swinging, jumping to a quick 4-0 lead. But the Blue Devils responded with a run of their own, shifting the momentum and eventually claiming the set 25-21.

Sault carried that energy into the fourth, where they dominated early and Alpena struggled to regain communication on the court. Despite their efforts, the Wildcats were unable to keep pace, falling 25-18 in the final set.
