Support Alpena’s planned warming shelter

A variance for the opening of a warming shelter at the former St. Bernard Parish Center has been tabled because of residential objections. I am deeply saddened. The warming shelter would provide a safe structure for those who are less fortunate. It would provide an environment where they could stay warm, get some nutrition and the most important element would be getting positive information and support to help them work through their family situations. The warming shelter is not meant to be the end of the line, it is a beginning. Any one of us are a step away from situations which could put us in similar circumstances and all of us have made bad decisions at some time that has caused grief. Everyone deserves compassion and understanding and a helping hand.

Over 100 students bounce from place to place to find a couch to sleep on. There are many who live paycheck to paycheck and are a stone’s throw from losing their homes. As a volunteer for St. Vincent de Paul, I have become painfully aware of the needs of others. It is very easy as we sit in warm homes, with food on our tables, sufficient clothing and a comfortable place to sleep to look at others and make judgments. But they are just like you and me and they deserve respectful consideration.

I appeal to all who object to this warming shelter and in this season of giving, examine what it might be like to be turned away when you need a helping hand. Can we find it in our hearts to reach out to our brothers and sisters and lend them compassionate support? In the Gospel of Matthew the Lord says, “whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.”
