Patriotic duty: Observe stay-home orders

It goes without saying we live in unprecedented times. Alpena and Michigan as a whole are ghost towns … or at least they should be.

April 15 saw thousands march on Lansing to protest the “barbaric” Stay at Home Order, calling Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s mandate an “infringement upon citizens’ rights.”

I implore you, take the time to consider this: How is a mandate designed to protect those who cannot protect themselves barbaric?

My mother cannot protect herself. She, along with approximately 3.6% of the U.S. population, is immunocompromised. Cancer patients, the elderly, those with genetic defects and weakened immune systems stand little to no chance of fighting a COVID-19 infection without assistance from a ventilator and trained medical personnel. There are only 62,000 operational ventilators in the U.S. and over 10 million immunocompromised individuals. Take 100 people you love. Choose three to die. This is the situation those who do not respect the Stay at Home Order exacerbate.

The Constitution first and foremost protects one’s right to life. Nowhere does it mention the right to purchase grass seeds. Every time someone neglects Gov. Whitmer’s mandate, they endanger the lives of untold numbers of people. We all have a duty. To our families. To our neighbors. To our country. Do your duty, and stay at home.

AIDEN CARDWELL,

President, Young

Democrats of Alpena
