Become informed, then vote yes on March 10

Students, faculty, staff and guests of Alpena Public Schools all deserve a safe, warm and dry place to work, whether they are learning, teaching or supporting activities in myriad ways. As a veteran of over a half-century with APS, I wholeheartedly support the district’s efforts to provide the best possible education for our young people, and I will be voting YES on March 10.

During my involvement with APS — as a student at ACC in the mid-1960s, a student teacher, a teacher, an administrator, university faculty supervising student teachers or a trustee on the Board of Education — I have seen the district make careful and wise use of limited resources, local, state and federal.

As I consider my home as well as the facilities of APS, it’s clear that things wear out, regardless of how well they are maintained.

My 47-year-old house is covered by its third roof, and heated by its third furnace. Hot water comes from my fourth water heater. Appliances have come and gone: stoves, fridges, dishwashers, washers, dryers, telephones, televisions, computers and printers. Windows, too.

The same has happened in our schools regardless of how well things are maintained and serviced. Failing roofs and heating systems are to be expected. We want to live in safe and secure homes, and we expect our schools to provide a safe and secure place for everyone who enters them.

Everyone at APS is working hard to provide a 21st century education for our students, and that is most effectively done in settings which are safe, warm, and dry.
