ACES a community asset

Whatever the reasons, not every student will succeed in a traditional classroom setting.

But Alpena Public Schools won’t let those students go.

The district offers Alternative Choices for Educational Success — or ACES — Academy, a 100% online program offered in a classroom setting that includes daily mentoring to help guide students toward timely graduation outside of traditional classrooms and separate from the general student population.

ACES students also can enroll in Alpena High School career and technical education courses, dual enroll at Alpena Community College, earn credits through volunteering, and can work at a job during non-scheduled class time.

ACES is not an easy way out. Students there still are expected to meet the APS graduation credit requirements.

But the academy does offer students a different way to earn those credits when they might not otherwise earn them.

“ACES offers opportunities to students who may not be successful in a general classroom situation,” APS school board President Anna Meinhardt said after a recent presentation by ACES staff and students. “I’m grateful that we can offer that alternative education program and I’m grateful for (ACES director Matt) Poli and his staff and what they do to ensure that those kids are getting the education that they need.”

We couldn’t agree more.

Kudos and thanks go to APS and ACES leadership for keeping the program going and to ACES students for all the hard work that they do.
