With Roe decision, the fight is yours

Now that the U.S. Supreme Court has reversed the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that granted abortion rights to women across America, the fight over abortion rights immediately goes back to the states.

And to you.

There’s definitely a fight here in Michigan.

Here, Roe v. Wade nullified a 1931 law banning most abortions. With the Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe, the 1931 law would go back into effect.

Except a Court of Claims judge has temporarily paused Michigan’s abortion ban while a court fight continues, and Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer wants the state Supreme Court to nullify it for good. Legislative Republicans, meanwhile, have defended the law, and some Republicans have introduced legislation that would impose 10-year prison sentences for those who provide abortions.

While politicians will fight, the real fight is yours, dear reader. Our lawmakers need to hear from you.

If you want the Legislature to repeal or modify the 1931 law, you need to tell them. If you want a brand-new law limiting abortions or one protecting access to abortions, you need to tell them.

If you want Whitmer to stop her fight to nullify the law, you need to tell her. If you want her to keep going, tell her that, too.

You can reach Whitmer at Michigan.gov/Whitmer. You can find contact information for lawmakers at legislature.mi.gov and clicking on “Legislators” in the menu at the left side of the page.

And then, this is an election year. You need to vote.

You can demonstrate, too, but we agree with President Joe Biden’s insistence on Friday that any demonstrations stay peaceful. Violence is never the answer, and threats and intimidation are not protected free speech.

Get involved.
