Excited to see bond work moving forward

The Alpena Public Schools Board of Education has begun approving contracts for major renovations at its schools that will be paid for through bond debt voters approved in March.

The $33.9 million bond project will over the next several years upgrade the mechanicals and security at every school in the district, along with some other much-needed sprucing up. The bond debt will be repaid through property taxes over the next several years.

The school board recently OK’d $1.3 million in contracts for work at Besser, Lincoln, and Wilson elementary schools that is scheduled to begin in June.

Best of all, all but one of the contractors are local, meaning taxpayers’ investment will not only benefit the schools, but the larger community, as well.

Earning the school work is Meridian Contracting, TRC Roofing, Weinkauf Plumbing and Heating Inc., John’s Electric Inc., and MacArthur Construction. The only non-local contractor is the Bay City-based Pyramid Paving.

We are excited to see these projects get off the ground, and we can’t wait to see what the schools look like when the work is completed.
