Motorists, beware of ghosts and goblins

With all the ghosts and goblins out and about on Saturday across the region, we urge motorists to drive extra carefully that evening.

Motorists should allow extra time for their trips as they slow down for the Halloween activities in communities around the region.

Illuminated by a blue moon that evening (the second full moon in a calendar month), trick-or-treaters should enjoy a typical autumn evening Saturday, with no rain anticipated.

This year, everyone is encouraged to wear masks and observe social distancing. Trick-or-treaters are urged not to group up at a residence and maintain distance between themselves and others. It is suggested you trick-or-treat only with people you live with this year. Patience at homes distributing candy will be not only a virtue this Halloween, but a necessity.

In addition to coronavirus safety practices, here are some other Halloween reminders from the American Academy of Pediatrics to ensure that a safe time is enjoyed by all.

∫Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Make sure that shoes fit well and that costumes are short enough to prevent tripping, entanglement or contact with flame.

∫Consider adding reflective tape or striping to costumes and trick-or-treat bags for greater visibility.

∫Obtain flashlights with fresh batteries for all children and their escorts.

∫A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children on their neighborhood rounds.

∫Never cut across yards or use alleys.

∫Only cross the street as a group in established crosswalks. Never cross between parked cars or out driveways.

∫Carry a cellphone in case of emergency.

∫Wet leaves should be swept from sidewalks and steps.

Have fun this Halloween by being both smart and safe.
