Get out and vote!

Tuesday is Michigan’s primary election, and we encourage all eligible voters to head to the polls.

Primary elections, unfortunately, often get far less attention than the gubernatorial and presidential elections that happen in November. But they are just as important.

Primaries are used to determine which candidates represent their parties in the general election in the fall, and low turnout in August means a small fraction of the electorate decides which choices the rest of the voters have in November.

In Northeast Michigan this year, with no Democrats on the ballot in many races, the primaries will decide who wins the seat, because August winners will head into November unopposed.

There also are a number of ballot proposals up for a vote this year.

Michigan allows voters to register to vote as late as Election Day. Visit Michigan.gov/vote to find out if you’re registered and for information on how to do so.

Visit us here at The News, 130 Park Place, Alpena, to pick up a special section profiling all of the candidates in competitive races this year and all of the ballot proposals.

And then vote.
