The News is here for you

We are glad Gov. Gretchen Whitmer saw the wisdom in declaring the news media an “essential service” as she ordered other businesses closed in an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Journalists the world over, including right here in Northeast Michigan, are working hard to bring you critical information not only about the spread of the virus and the government’s response to that spread but also how both the disease and official efforts to slow it are changing our communities.

Here at The News, we’ve held local government officials and courts to account for maintaining public access amid the shutdowns, written extensively about how our local small businesses are trying to make it through, and covered the many ways our residents are rallying to support one another during this time of high anxiety.

That’s information you won’t get anywhere else.

To our many readers without access to the internet or even TV, the newspaper delivered to their doorstep is the only way they can stay informed so they can protect themselves. That’s why we have printed public health officials’ guidance word-for-word.

We and Ogden Newspapers, the Wheeling, West Virginia company that owns The News, are going beyond journalism, too. Ogden has set up a $1 million matching fund to boost local businesses’ ad-buying power so they can tell potential customers about the services they still offer.

The News is here for you, and will be as long as we’re able.

But we can’t do it without you.

If you’re able, please subscribe, take out an ad, buy a classified ad. Keep The News strong so we can keep serving the public.
