Congrats, Bob Thomson

Northeast Michiganders are well-acquainted with Bob Thomson’s dedication to education and to broadening our students’ horizons through science, technology, engineering, and math.

Now, the whole state knows it, too.

Thomson recently was honored with the Excellence in Education award from the Michigan Lottery, which comes with a plaque, a $1,500 cash prize, and a $500 grant to his classroom, school, or school district.

Thomson said he will use the grant toward classroom supplies and building more project opportunities for students.

The award also earned Thomson a spot on news TV stations around the state, highlighting his dedication for others to see.

In classic Thomson humility, the teacher said he’s grateful for the award but that notes from students telling him he made a difference in their lives are more meaningful.

“Those are the best, when you can get a kid that can validate that what you’ve done has made a difference in their life,” Thomson told reporter Julie Goldberg for a recent story. “For me, that’s what it’s about.”

We’re glad Hinks Elementary School Principal Jean Kowalski saw fit to nominate Thomson and that the Michigan Lottery saw fit to give him a much-deserved, honor.

Congratulations, Mr. Thomson.
