Last call for 2-way street debate

Could discussions surrounding two-way traffic through downtown Alpena be nearing an end?

That seems to be the case, and discussion at the City Council Monday could very well be the last time the public has a chance to offer input at a public setting into the decision process.

Thus, if you have an opinion on the subject that should be expressed, Monday would be the time to do so.

Earlier in the week the Alpena Downtown Development Authority met and gave their approval to a new plan for two-way traffic on Second. The plan offers parking on both sides of the street, but drastically narrows the traffic lanes on Second.

In many ways it seems a good compromise to the concerns expressed on two-way traffic. City officials deserve credit for listening and then responding to what they were hearing.

There is some concern, however, whether there is enough room for everyone under the new system. Could a tractor trailer bound for a downtown business, for example, be able to easily navigate through Second if met by an oncoming vehicle and there were vehicles parked already on both sides of the street?

The key to the question above is the word “easily.” Traffic engineers will tell you that yes, there would be room for everyone. Common sense, however, dictates that while technically that would be the case, it would be one heck of a tight squeeze.

If eventually adopted by council, the changes would be implemented after Labor Day.

Whatever your position it appears that the talking stage is almost over.

If you have an opinion, voice it. If you don’t, then don’t complain about it later.
