Keep it safe when handling fireworks

Nowhere is the Fourth of July better than in Northeast Michigan.

Of course mention the Fourth, and one naturally instantly thinks of fireworks. With access to fireworks so much easier today than in years past, we also remind residents to exercise caution when using them.

Even the most innocent of fireworks, such as hand held sparklers, can be dangerous if not used properly.

According to State Fire Marshal Julie Secontine, “Sparklers can reach 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit which can cause third degree burns. They can quickly ignite clothing and can cause grass fires if thrown on the ground. Always promptly dispose of used sparklers in a bucket of water.”

She reminds residents:

* Use of fireworks and sparklers should always be supervised by an adult.

* Light fireworks one at a time, then immediately back away to a safe distance.

* Always ensure that people and pets are out of range before lighting fireworks.

* Light fireworks outdoors on a driveway or other paved surface at least 25 feet away from houses and highly flammable materials such as dry grass or mulch.

* Always keep a bucket of water or a running garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap, and douse spent fireworks after in a bucket of water.

This year let’s celebrate the Fourth of July, and the days leading up to it, safely and responsibly.
