A standing ovation for Alpena Public Schools’ CTE and industry expo

We would like to congratulate Alpena Public Schools on a truly successful Career and Technical Education (CTE) and Industry Expo held Wednesday night. The evening was impressive from start to finish and reflected the strength, vision, and collaboration happening right here in our community.

As we toured the various labs and classrooms, we were struck by both the quality of the facilities and the enthusiasm inside them. Congratulations are due to CTE Director Jessie Gillard and Principal Romeo Bourdage for executing such a dynamic and well-organized showcase. It was also clear that much of the state-of-the-art equipment on display exists because of the forward-thinking vision and leadership of Joyce McCoy. The investment in modern, industry-relevant tools is paying off, and it shows in the confidence and competence of the students using them. These students are from around the region, not just Alpena.

There was an excellent showing from area industries and businesses, whose partnership and leadership are essential to the success of these programs. We were encouraged to see representatives from industry, AMA-ESD, NEMCSA, Mid-Michigan Medical Center, and Alpena Community College working alongside APS, all united by a shared commitment to student success.

The students and teachers were welcoming, knowledgeable, and genuinely proud of their work. We especially appreciated that students led many of the discussions, explaining their projects, equipment, and career pathways with clarity and confidence. The teachers demonstrate passion and are “all-in”! We saw great enthusiasm from industry partners who clearly enjoy mentoring and working with young people. Students experience a wide variety of technologies, preparing them with the skills and adaptability needed for today’s workforce – sometimes immediately.

This expo was more than an open house–it was a powerful statement about collaboration, opportunity, and the future workforce of our region. APS and its partners should be very proud.
