Frederick Hammermeister

Born on April 12, 1947, in Alpena to Adolph and Florence (Larson) Hammermeister, Fred’s life was a testament to the values of love, dedication, and hard work. After graduating from J.W. Sexton High School in Lansing in 1965, Fred enlisted to serve his country joining The U.S. Marine Corps Reserves in 1966, serving six years before being honorably discharge with the rank of Corporal in 1972. On June 3, 1967, he married the love of his life, Annette Spencer, in Lansing and together they built a family that would become his greatest pride and accomplishment. Their union was blessed with two wonderful children, Todd (Heather), and Lori (Alec Easley) Hiler. Fred’s role as a father was only surpassed by his delight in being a grandfather to TJ, Chad, Jordan, Hunter, Cameron, Noah, and Abigail, and later a great-grandfather to nine cherished great-grandchildren.

After a long, impressive career working in management for various manufacturing companies in Michigan and Ohio, Fred retired from TRW Automotive in Fayette, Ohio before relocating home to Alpena to spend his retirement years close to family. Fred’s sisters, Kathleen DeRocher and Elaine (Jack) Pearcey, remember him as a loving brother who was always ready to lend a hand. His childhood friend and brother-in-law, Paul Spencer, viewed him as a brother who put family before himself. He was preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Florence, and his siblings, Eunice Kreuger and Pauline LeClair. His extended family of nieces and nephews will miss his guidance and the joy he brought to family gatherings. A man of many interests, Fred was an avid golfer who enjoyed the camaraderie of the game as much as the sport itself. He was a lifelong fan of the Detroit Tigers, following their ups and downs with unwavering support. His competitive spirit shone brightly during Euchre games with his card club, where he was both a fierce competitor and a gracious partner. Fred was also known for his handy nature, always working on a project and roping in family members to assist, teaching them valuable skills and the importance of perseverance. Above all, Fred was a family man. Taking care of his loved ones was not just a duty but a source of immense joy and pride. His ability to love unconditionally and his knack for fixing anything that needed repair made him the cornerstone of his family. Fred’s legacy is one of love and service, and his memory will be cherished by those who were fortunate enough to know him.

A celebration of Fred’s life will be held on Monday, Oct. 20, 2025 at the VFW Hall #2496 on Connon St. in Alpena. Visiting hours will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Military honors will be accorded by VFW Post #2496 and the U.S. Marines beginning at 4 p.m. Casual dress – “come as you are” is appropriate. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to Hospice of Michigan. Arrangements are in the care of McWilliams Funeral Home.
