Mabel Townsend

Mabel Violete Liske was born September 28, 1931, in Alpena County to the late Albert and Amelia (Kihn) Liske on the family farm which she was proud of. She graduated from Alpena High School in 1950 and worked various jobs from manufacturing to retail and retired from JCPenney. On June 18, 1955, she married William Townsend, they celebrated 68 years together. He preceded her in death on November 17, 2023. They had two children, Nancy and Tom. Mabel liked gardening, flowers, crafts, watching birds in her later years, traveling, and many sports. She was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and volunteered at the Friendship Room.

Surviving are her two children, Nancy Broderick, Thomas (Marie) Townsend; 4 grandchildren, Jamus (Laura) Lapczynski, Danielle (Tim) Kaiser, Christopher Broderick, Brian (Lori) Townsend; 4 great-grandchildren, Drew Lapczynski, Reagan Lapczynski, Morgan Caldwell, Max Townsend; several nieces and nephews.

Mabel was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Joseph Broderick; 3 siblings, Theresa Sommerfield, Delores Michaluk, and William Liske.

Memorial visitation will take place at St. Paul Lutheran Church – Alpena on Saturday, September 13, 2025, from 10 a.m. until the time of the memorial service at 12 p.m. with Rev. John Shipman officiating. Cremation arrangements have been handled by the Bannan Funeral Home.
