RICHARD HENRY FANCHER

RICHARD HENRY FANCHER

Oct. 1, 1941

Richard “Dick the Charmer” Henry Fancher, a man known for his infectious sense of humor and generous spirit, passed away peacefully in Posen, surrounded by his loving family. Born on Oct. 1, 1941, in Pontiac, to the late Earl Jr. and Dorothy (Westphal) Fancher Judd, Dick’s life was marked by service, family, and a passion for life’s simple pleasures.

Dick proudly served in the Air Force from 1959 to 1971, including a tour in Vietnam that exemplified his courage and dedication to his country. After his military service, he continued to devote himself to the well-being of others as an EMT for Hillman’s ambulance service, where he responded to emergencies with both skill and compassion. Later, Dick found his calling in the kitchen, working as a chef and dietary manager. He spent many years crafting traditional home-cooked meals for long-term care residents eventually retiring from Tendercare Alpena, leaving behind a legacy of nourished bodies and hearts.

In 1989, Dick married the love of his life, Della Gordon, and together they blended a beautiful family. Dick is survived by his wife, Della; his sons, Mark (Mary) Fancher and Jason; Della’s sons, Tony Gordon, David Gordon, and Aaron (June) Gordon; his siblings, Terry (Carolyn) Farmer and Peggy (David) Desrocher; his cherished grandchildren, Jacob Fancher, Lt. Hannah Fancher, MD USAF, Kyle Dohn, Kelsey Gordon, David Gordon, Jr., Devin Gordon, Trevor Gordon, Trenton Gordon, Meridien Gordon, Matthew Gordon, and Colton Gordon; as well as his nephews, Chad Farmer and Bryan Desrocher; and niece, Nicole Brehmer. He was preceded in death by his sister Caroline Tincknell and his beloved niece, Tina Farmer.

Dick’s interests were as rich and varied as his life experiences. An avid outdoorsman, he found solace and joy in hunting and fishing, activities that allowed him to connect with nature and pass on his skills and love for the outdoors to his family. He was also an ardent reader, often found with his nose in historical books, absorbing the stories and lessons of the past. One of his most cherished hobbies was building and donating gingerbread houses to area schools, a testament to his talent in the kitchen and his desire to spread joy to others.

Perhaps one of Dick’s fondest memories was giving his baby sister’s hand in marriage, a moment that encapsulated his role as a protector and loving brother. It was these personal touches, the small acts of kindness and love, that truly defined him.

Dick “the Charmer” will be remembered for his unwavering positivity, his ability to light up a room with his humor, and his deep commitment to his family and community. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched with his warmth and generosity.
