Donald Raymond Read

DONALD RAYMOND READ

Lincoln – Donald R. Read 91, died on March 27, 2023, at home. He was born Dec. 11, 1931, in Mount Clemens, Michigan. The son of Donald Read Sr and Emma Read.

Donald graduated from Oscoda High School. Following graduation, he worked for his father at Don Read Construction, then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force 1952 and served at Sampson Air Force base in New York State. On Aug. 29, 1953, he married Margret Apsey of Lincoln, Michigan. After serving in the U.S. Air Force, they settled in Lincoln and have been married for 69 years.

Donald went back to work for Don Read Construction until he started D&B Building Supply in Lincoln, Michigan. After selling that company he started Mako Construction. Between Don Read Construction and Mako Construction he built several commercial projects and schools. After closing his construction company, he then started MDR Consulting where he was a Project Manager for several projects with the last two projects being the Alcona High School, and the Streetscape in Lincoln Michigan.

Donald was the former president of the Lincoln Lions Club and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed spending time at his hunting camp, Fawn Valley. He also traveled to Wyoming for mule deer, Montana for Elk, Quebec for Caribou, Idaho for elk and Anticosti Island for white tail deer. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking, carving and gardening.

What was most important in his life was his family. He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He was also very well known as the Candy Man at his daughter’s daycare in Lincoln, Michigan.

Surviving in addition to his wife, is his sister Virginia Budreau of Harrisville Michigan; his son David Read (Beth) of Hubbard Lake, Michigan; Daughter Teresa Hart (Greg) of Lincoln, Michigan; Daughter Kathy Austin (James) of Fredonia, New York: 10 grandchildren Erica Wellman, Danielle Werth, Amanda Zielinski, Kristen Sherwood, Kevin Hart, Sarah Parrott, Chris Austin, Jason Ferguson, Tyler Ferguson, Anna Austin, and 16 great-grandchildren Emma Allen, Lily Allen, Noah LaFeldt, Hazel LaFeldt, Paxton Zielinski, Myles Zielinski, Camden Zielinski, Thayer Sherwood, Olivia Sherwood, Nora Hart, Juliana Hart, Jax Parrott, Lexi Ferguson, Madi Ferguson, George Ferguson, Eloise Ferguson.

Visitation will be Friday, March 31, 2023, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a Rosary Service at 7 p.m. at Gillies Funeral Home 104 West Alger Street Lincoln, Michigan. A Mass will be held Saturday, April 1, 2023, at St. Anne Catholic Church in Harrisville, Michigan at 11 a.m. Father Boks will officiate. Memorial donations are suggested to Hospice Compassus, in lieu of flowers.
