RONALD D. (RON) GARANT

On the morning of Oct. 13, 2021, Ron Garant, owner of Garant’s Office Supplies in downtown Alpena, died at 74 at MidMichigan Medical Center-Alpena. He was born on Aug. 16, 1947 to Edgar “Ace” and Shirley (Kauffman) Garant in Alpena. On Sept. 8, 1973 he married Darlene Budnick and together they raised four children and enjoyed 48 years of marriage.

After helping to build the Alpena home where the Navy veteran and Rotarian raised his children, he loved his last years enjoying the lake life at Long Lake. Ron was a member of the Hillman Rotary Club, Knights of Columbus and All Saints Parish. He enjoyed playing cards with his buddies on Wednesday and racing cars. He would love to talk to you about his business, his family or anything else, until his children or wife dragged him away.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Darlene, sons, Brian (Sarah) of Oak Lawn, Illinois, Keith (Lisa) of Alpena, and Daniel (Jennifer) of Canton, Michigan, daughter, Heather (Michael) Ellis of Easley, South Carolina, as well as eight grandchildren, Kela, Heidi, Tidus, Charlotte, Amelia, Willow, Katya, and Maxim. He is also survived by his brothers, Joesph (Pat) Garant and Bill (Mary) Garant, and sisters, Sharon Crocker, Diane Dziesinski, and Beth (Michael) MacArthur. All of Ron’s siblings reside in Alpena. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers-in-law, David Dziesinski and Harry Crocker, and one niece, Ami Lenning.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, Oct. 17, 2021 at Karpus-Hunter Funeral Home from 2 to 8 p.m. A Parish Prayer service will begin at 7 p.m. followed by Full Military Honors as accorded by VFW Post No. 2496. Visitation will continue Monday, Oct. 18, 2021 at 10 a.m at St. Anne Catholic Church of All Saints Parish. Mass of Christian Burial will follow beginning at 11 a.m. with Father Tyler Bischoff officiating. The service will be livestreamed on Karpus-Hunter Funeral Home’s Facebook page and available to view after the service on the Karpus-Hunter website, karpushuntercares.com. Condolences for the family may also be made on the website.

Memorials may be made in Ron’s name to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or friends’ choice.
