ELIZABETH ‘BETTY’ LOU McDONNELL

Mrs. Elizabeth “Betty” Lou McDonnell, 88 of Alpena, Michigan, formerly of Atlanta, died peacefully surrounded by the love of her family on June 11, 2021 at Turning Brook in Alpena. She was born on June 24, 1932 to the late Charles and Stella (Patton) Brown in Atlanta, Michigan inside the county courthouse. At the time her dad was the sheriff for the county and they resided in the courthouse building. Betty attended Michigan State College and studied criminal justice. She taught at County Normal and was the librarian for several years at the Montmorency County Library. She was also the meeting facilitator for Weight Watchers. Betty was a member of the Art Guild in Atlanta and Jesus The Good Shepherd Catholic Church. She loved being part of her community and helping others. When she wasn’t working or volunteering she enjoyed numerous hobbies including oil painting, reading, listening to audio books, knitting, cheering on the Michigan State Spartans, and lawn gatherings with friends. Most importantly, she enjoyed the time she spent with family and will be deeply missed.

Betty is survived by her children, Patrick (Carla) McDonnell, of Okemos, Michael (Cindy Boyer) McDonnell, of Negaunee, Erin (Steven) Kieliszewski, of Alpena, Terrence (Jill) McDonnell, of Charlevoix, grandchildren, Christopher, Emily, Hailey, Collin, Connor, Colby, Cody, Kirby, Cole, Cameron, Jenna, and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Stella Brown, husband, Lyle, brothers, Wayne, Clyde, Garnett “Dave,” and sisters, Wanda Dann, Dolores Mowery, and Murl Marlatt.

Funeral services for Mrs. McDonnell will take place at noon on Thursday, June 17, 2021 at Jesus the Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Atlanta, Fr. Jim Siler officiating.
