Road commission busy this winter

ALPENA – In Northern Michigan, the piles of snow around the area are beginning to resemble small mountains.
Alpena County Road Commission Managing Director, Ryan Brege said this winter season has required more road maintenance than the last several.
“This has been a snowier year than past years and we have seen an increase in salt usage,” Brege said. “We are planning to order backup salt in the near future,”
After a large snowfall, the roads can be a mess and road commision employees begin the clean up process. Brege said in order to keep his crews and motorists safe, people need to slow down and be extra mindful of driving conditions.
“Motorists are advised to allow extra time to reach their destination,” Brege said. “We would also remind drivers they must stay 200 feet behind a snow plow or snow removal equipment actively plowing roads.”
If a person breaks 200 foot law and is issued a ticket, possible penalties could be a $100 fine. However, courts can order community service as an alternative or an additional punishment.
That is part of new winter driving safety laws aimed to protect plow operators and motorists from crashes and tragedy.
The large piles of snow around town are only going to get bigger, which can present a problem. Berge said that right now, the road commission has enough space for the snow if it needs to be hauled.
“We are fortunate in the fact that we are able to continue pushing snow banks back as they build up to avoid having to haul snow away,” he said.
Just like any other occupation, the road commission faces its share of adversity. Among them, mechanical issues.
“Oftentimes breakdowns will cause a delay in being able to address snowy roadways,” Brege said.
Another hurdle is staffing shortages. If you are on the hunt for a job, the road commission is hiring.
“We are advertising for a truck driver and mechanic position currently,” Brege said.
