Alcona Community Schools alumni launch sports hall of fame initiative
A dedicated group of Alcona Community Schools alumni has announced the formation of the Alcona Community Schools Sports Hall of Fame, an initiative designed to recognize and celebrate the outstanding athletes, teams, coaches, and contributors who have shaped the district’s proud athletic tradition.
Driven by a shared passion for preserving Alcona’s sports legacy, the alumni group has spent months laying the foundation for the Hall of Fame. Their efforts have already resulted in the launch of an official website and a companion podcast, both aimed at sharing stories, memories, and historical insights from Alcona athletics across generations. In addition, the group has officially opened its nomination platform, allowing community members, alumni, and supporters to submit candidates for future induction. The board of directors will create the official ballot, and all voting members will determine who is inducted annually.
“This is about honoring excellence, commitment, and the lasting impact athletics has had on our school and community,” said a representative from the organizing committee. “We want to make sure the achievements of Alcona athletes and supporters are remembered and celebrated for years to come,” said Mike Gunderson, current president.
The Sports Hall of Fame will be guided by its founding leadership team, made up of alumni committed to transparency, community involvement, and long-term sustainability. The founding members are:
Mike Gunderson – President
Alex Cole – Vice President
Les Thomas – Treasurer
Chris Kersten – Secretary
Jodi Williams – Member at Large
Colette Stanbury – Member at Large
Bob Sonnenberg – Member at Large
To support the initiative and help fund ongoing operations, memberships are now available to the public. A one-year membership can be purchased for $25, while a lifetime membership is available for $250. Memberships will help sustain the Hall of Fame’s programs, events, digital platforms, and future induction ceremonies.
The alumni group encourages anyone with ties to Alcona Community Schools–former athletes, graduates, families, and fans–to get involved by submitting nominations, becoming members, and tuning in to the podcast.
