Wildcats girls basketball hopes to leave mark in Big North Conference

ALPENA — As the Alpena High School varsity girls basketball team gears up for the upcoming season, head coach Mark Toppe is optimistic about what lies ahead. With a focus on competitiveness, teamwork, and hard work, he said the Wildcats are determined to make a mark in the Big North Conference.
“Our goal this year is to be competitive in the Big North Conference,” Toppe said. The team is striving to make its presence felt in a league known for its tough competition.
The Wildcats will rely on a blend of seasoned seniors and young talent to drive their success.
“Playing time is earned in practice and the off-season,” said Toppe. “I think we have a nice mix of senior leadership and young talent.”
One area of emphasis this season is conditioning and spacing.
“We are focusing on our spacing and getting in great shape so we can push the ball and play very hard for the entire game,” Toppe said. A fast-paced style of play will demand high levels of stamina and discipline
Toppe is confident in the team’s determination and versatility.
“I feel we have players that will not quit and will battle the whole game,” he said. “We have a great mix of good post and guard players.”
They hope that this versatility will allow the Wildcats to adapt to various opponents and game situations.

Alpena kicks off their season tonight with their home opener against Petoskey at 7 p.m.
