Alcona Tigers conquer Atlanta Huskies in the district match-up, 52-0
ALCONA — At Alcona High School’s district game on Friday, the Tigers brought down their opponents, the Atlanta Huskies, in a high-scoring game.
Alcona blanked Atlanta with a final score of 52-0.
“I was pretty stoked about the way they came out and played,” head coach Jason Somers said, “So that was awesome.”
Within the first ten seconds of the game, Alcona gained the lead with their first touchdown by junior Karsen Gonyea. Alcona tried for a two-point conversion, in which they succeeded.
Shortly after, with Alcona’s defense stopping Atlanta from scoring, senior Evan Woods brought the ball into the endzone for the Tigers’ second touchdown. An incomplete pass during the two-point conversion held the score at 14-0 favoring Alcona.
Back on defense, junior Gavin Dellar brought Atlanta down with a tackle. When Alcona gained possession of the ball, junior Brandon Fogle carried the ball into another touchdown for the Tigers. Another incomplete two-point conversion followed.
The quarterback, senior Garret Somers, completed a two-point conversion for the Tigers after Gonyea carried the ball 58 yards for a fourth touchdown.
Alcona, putting point after point on the board, gained another touchdown by Fogle and completed a two-point conversion by Woods.
With the first quarter ending, Alcona had possession and a lead of 34-0.
To start the second quarter, a flag got thrown onto the field after an interception by Atlanta, and the Alcona Tigers got a personal foul.
An interception by Somers made Alcona gain back possession, putting them in a position for Woods to score the sixth touchdown. A two-point conversion completed by Somers added to their lead.
Senior William Liebler ran the ball into the endzone gaining another six points for the Tigers. Fogle, on a two-point conversion, brought the score up to 52-0 for Alcona at the end of the second quarter.
After halftime, the action of the offense decreased and the defense held the lead for the remainder of the game.
Struggling to stop Atlanta’s offense, and the offensive players for Alcona being put to a challenge by Atlanta’s defense, the Alcona Tigers weren’t able to score another point the rest of the game.
“All of these guys came together and played for the love of football,” Somers said. “They’re really special kids.”
With this win, Alcona moves forward in the eight-player playoffs.
The Tigers’ next game is at 7 p.m. on Friday, at Alcona High School, against Indian River Inland Lakes.
