PREP ROUNDUP: Alpena cross country takes second
Early Saturday morning found the Alpena High School cross country team on the road again and racing at the 50th Petoskey Kiwanis Cross Country Invitational.
Freshman standout Xander Allen took charge early in the men’s race winning impressively with a time of 16:24.6 while pacing the Wildcat team to a second place finish in the large school division. South Lyon and BNC Rival Petoskey finished first and third respectively.
Allen, Logan Szumila, Kenan Knight, and Brenden Werth all earned medals by placing in the top 25 overall.
In the girls’ race, Amelia Roznowski was the top Wildcat along with Elizabeth Barnhill and Izzy Szymanski who also brought home top 25 hardware.
Next up for the team is the Shepherd Bluejay Invitational at Shepherd High School on Saturday.

ALCONA FOOTBALL DEFEATS ATLANTA
Alcona High School’s football team defeated Atlanta High School in a weather-shortened game by a score of 28-0.
ACC XC FINISHES THIRD
OVERALL
The Alpena Community College cross country team finished third overall in their inaugural Northern Conference Cross Country meet held Friday in Muskegon.
For the Lumberjacks, freshman Ryan Allen (Reed City), finished second overall, earning him both First Team All-Conference honors and All-Conference Freshmen team.
“Overall, another good meet for the team,” ACC Coach Mark Jacobs said. “We are where we need to be at midpoint of the season. We will continue to work hard and be ready for Regionals.”
Following Allen for ACC were Ty Kailing (Reed City) who finished in 15th place, Carter Upper (Harrisville) in 16th place, Chip Allen (Alpena) in 17th place, Dante Gray (Manistee) in 23rd place, Ben Purat (Novi) in 30th place, Calvin Hibbler (Livonia) in 32nd place, and Forrest Hissong (Ludington) in 35th place.
Alpena next travels to Grayling on Oct. 4 to run at the Kirtland Invite.
