They are expecting to see a decrease from the 2023-24 fiscal year as well as fewer students, adjusting their per-pupil foundation allowance.

ALPENA — Alpena Public Schools is looking at a balanced budget for the 2024-25 fiscal year as the APS Board of Education held its budget hearing on Monday

The board voted unanimously for the adoption of the preamble and resolution of the 2024-25 general appropriations budget resolution.

Prior to their vote, the board held its budget hearing for the upcoming school year’s budget proposal to discuss projected revenue and expenditures.

Both general fund revenue and expenditures saw a decrease from the 2023-24 school year with revenue going from $58 million to $54 million and expenditures seeing similar margins going from roughly $58 million to $54 million.

Rabbideau emphasized that the budget for the 2024-25 fiscal year is built on several speculative factors, particularly due to the state’s silence on updates or movements in educational funding.

The district’s budget also assumes a new per-pupil foundation allowance of $9,849, based on the governor’s proposal, representing a $241 increase per student.

Additionally, APS has budgeted for 10 fewer students, reflecting a decline in student population similar to trends seen across Michigan.
