ALPENA — From the courts to the diamond, Nathan Barden’s athletic prowess knew no bounds. Barden, born and raised in Alpena, left an indelible mark on the sporting landscape, etching his name into Alpena High School’s athletic history.
This year, the former Wildcat is one of four to be inducted into The Alpena Sports Hall of Fame.
Barden’s journey began during his years at Alpena High School as a standout in both basketball and baseball. After graduating in the Class of 1999, Barden became a household name in the Alpena sports scene.
On the basketball court, Barden’s imposing presence and powerful play earned him statewide recognition, Class A all-state third team, showcasing his expertise among Michigan’s elite high school athletes.
His achievements didn’t stop there as Barden’s baseball skills were equally plentiful. Named to the baseball all-state Dream Team, he showcased a rare blend of power and finesse that set him apart from his peers. The Dream Team is composed of nine players in the state chosen each year as the best in each position on the field. Barden was chosen for pitching, a selection made by the Associated Press and all the basketball coaches in Michigan from the first-team all-state players.
A student-athlete of the highest caliber, he earned awards such as the Detroit Free Press Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 1999 and secured his place among USA Today’s top high school baseball players. Barden’s commitment to excellence extended beyond the field of play, exemplified by his academic all-state honors and recognition as Alpena’s 1999 Male Athlete of the Year.
Despite Barden’s copious awards in athletics, he was always focused on his education and his passion for pursuing a career in the medical field, which led him to Grand Valley State Univerity after high school graduation.
“Athletics opened doors for me, but medicine was always my first love,” Barden said. “Choosing the right university for the best (physician assistant) program was crucial. Pairing that with playing sports for GVSU scholarships was a no-brainer.”
While in college, Barden’s journey took an unexpected turn when he received Major League Baseball invitations from the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Minnesota Twins. However, driven by a thirst for knowledge and personal growth, he chose to prioritize his education, a decision reflective of his determination to excel on and off the field.
“It was exciting to be considered for professional athletics but I was well aware of the statistics of those that actually make it professionally,” Barden said.
Barden’s decision to continue his education led him to receive a medical degree from GVSU, and he now works as a physician assistant and medical director in Alpena.
Today, Nathan Barden’s athletic legacy continues to inspire a new generation of athletes in Alpena. His name remains synonymous with resilience and a relentless pursuit of greatness.
On June 1, Barden will officially be inducted into The Alpena Sports Hall of Fame at its annual banquet.
As Alpena honors its finest athletes, Barden stands as an example of the spirit of sportsmanship and achievement.
