On Monday the APS Board of Education approved the adoption of Savvas enVision Mathematics and SuccessMaker as the new math curriculum for APS students grades six through 10. The new curriculum is set to start next fall.

ALPENA — Students in Alpena Public Schools grades six through 10 can expect a new math curriculum next fall as the APS Board of Education unanimously approved the adoption of Savvas enVision Mathematics and SuccessMaker during their board meeting on Monday.

“I would like to thank again publicly the committee that worked on this curriculum,” APS board President Anna Meinhardt said. “The teachers, community members, board members, staff. Thank you for that.”

In addition to approving the new curriculum, the board also approved a quote of $249,047.36 to secure Savvas for five years.

Prior to their decision on Monday, the board listened to a presentation on the curriculum during their monthly workshop on May 13. During this, they were also informed on some of the work the committee did to select Savvas as their new math curriculum for grades six through 10.

According to APS instructional coach Melissa Jarema, the committee looked at a number of different curricula and selected the ones that they thought would be the best fit for the APS, and by the time the committee was done, Savvas was what they landed on.

One element of Savass that was highlighted during the presentation was its accessibility to both students and teachers.

“For teacher planning, there are videos for professional development,” Jarema said. “Actual videos in the classroom that teachers can use as a jumping-off point.”
