Helping the community with haircuts

ALPENA — To help provide an overlooked service for those in need and help members of the Alpena community look their best, Sunrise Mission collaborated with Rebel Roots Hair Studio to hold a Free Haircut and Beard Trim Event on Monday.

“It’s all about the community,” Sunrise Mission’s Executive Director, Michelle Bailey said. “We just want to do as much as we can for the community.”

The event saw five hairstylists from Rebel Roots Hair Studio provide residents of Sunrise Mission, along with other members of the Alpena community, with free haircuts.

According to Bailey, the main inspiration for the event was the desire to provide residents of Sunrise Mission, as well as Members of the Alpena Community as a whole, with a service that they may not normally have access to due to financial limitations.

“One of the things that I realized is that there’s a real need for this kind of service in the community,” Bailey said. “Not just for our resident guests, but other families and individuals that are just having a hard time making it.”

Bailey mentioned that an important element in preparing for this event was also reaching out to other local nonprofits so that they could coordinate other possible events.

Rebel Roots owner Shauna Casler said that she and her crew were happy to volunteer their services for the event.

“We’re just happy to give back to the community,” Casler said. “It’s all about helping people.”

According to Bailey, Sunrise Mission will be looking to hold more events like that one in the future and hopefully provide other services.

“We’re working on a number of other types of events and classes and workshops that we want to open up to the community,” Bailey said. “Everything from budgeting, how to open up a bank account, how to save money, how to make a meal on a dime.”
