Alpena finds success at Battle of Champions

Alpena AAU Gymnastics team traveled to Toledo, Ohio to compete in the Battle of Champions Meet on Jan. 14. This is the first time Alpena has traveled to the Glass City Center to join eight other teams from around the state of Ohio. Alpena proved to hold their own.

Competing for the Xcel Silver team were Lydia Allen, Cailyn Peters, Aryanna Page, Livvy Spangle, Madelyn Coffman, and Brooklyn Finch.

Each of these strong ladies placed in their age division.

In the Silver division, Lydia earned first place on vault with a 9.45. Cailyn earned fourth place on beam with a 9.10. Aryanna earned three first-place finishes on vault (9.10), beam (9.30), and all-around (36.60). Livvy earned two second-place finishes on vault and beam (9.10). Madelyn earned fourth place on beam (9.25), while Brooklyn took fifth place on bars (9.00). This Xcel Silver team also placed third in the team event against eight other Ohio teams.

Competing for the Xcel Gold team were Abby Reinhardt, Savanna Spangle, and Callie Brousseau.

Abby placed second in two areas; vault (8.90) and all-around (35.55). Savannah placed first on the vault (9.00) and third all-around (35.30). Callie placed second on the floor (9.40).

Competing for the Platinum team were Paige Samp and Brooke Smith.

Brooke placed fifth on the floor (9.0), and sixth all-around (34.30). Paige had a strong day and placed second on floor (9.30), first on vault (9.35), and first in the all-around (36.55).

Coaches Geri Samp and Billy Brousseau were extremely happy with their gymnasts.

“I had no idea how we would compare to other teams outside the state of Michigan,” said Samp. “I was so excited to see that the girls could hold their own, up against such strong competition.”

“We learned a lot because these judges are different from the ones we see all season,” said Brousseau. “They were tough, but the girls did well.”
