Author to sign books Saturday at Olivet Book & Gift in dowtown Alpena

ALPENA — Dave Myers invites you to step into nature to find a closer connection to God and learn more about yourself in the process.

The Alpena author will be signing copies of his new book, “Breaking Camp: A Sportsman’s Guide to Pursuing God’s Truth,” from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday at Olivet Book & Gift in downtown Alpena.

Peppered with humor and well-written stories of outdoor family adventures, the book is a fun read full of wisdom and wit. Myers has a conversational style that makes you feel like you’re on the journey with him, hiking by his side. He also incorporates scripture verses and pertinent quotes to illustrate the lessons of each chapter.

For example, the chapter “Turkey Fever” starts with a quote from Wilma Rudolph: “Winning is great, but if you are really going to do something in life, the secret is learning how to lose. Nobody goes undefeated all the time. If you can pick up after a crushing defeat, and go on to win again, you are going to be a champion someday.”

Each short chapter (with pictures) gives inspiration to the outdoorsman or anyone who is seeking hope amid the trials of life.

“The wild calls out to each of us,” Myers states on the back cover of the book. “There’s something exhilarating about setting aside the daily grind to seek outdoor adventure — to face the potential struggles of roughing it — and to see if we can meet the demands that are required to be out in nature … By setting aside the noise of the bustling world, we can hear God speak to us in these moments and help to recalibrate how we live our lives.”

“So what you have is a collection of about 30 different outdoor stories that are in there,” Myers said. “Every one of them, I start off with an outdoor photo. Many times, the photo is actually taken on-site … And then I put a quote in there that ties into the topic of what the story’s going to be about … My goal is to make this an experience.”

Myers read an excerpt from “Breaking Camp.”

“We don’t necessarily ask for life’s problems, but they seem to find us,” he read. “I can’t claim to have a generic, easy answer as to why we have to endure these times, but what I can tell you is that we have a choice in the middle of life’s storms. We can become embittered, angry, unpleasant, or we can simply look for God to work in it. The lessons in life that have made the most impact on me have come through trials that required perseverance … Though I don’t wish for trials to come your way or mine, I do pray that we learn not to fight against God during them, and that we have the eyes and ears to see and hear what God is teaching us even when it seems that it’s just one thing after another.”

This is Myers’ second book. His first book, “Swim Upstream,” was published in 2010.

Myers has also been writing for Sportsmen’s Devotional (sportsmensdevotional.com) for about 15 years.

The books he writes are written in short chapters that make them easy to use as daily devotionals.

His journey as an author began in the great outdoors.

“Our family, we’re adventurous, we’re explorers, we just like doing fun stuff,” Myers said. “We love to travel. We were doing all sorts of things in the U.P. and Canada. We started going out west. With this book, we ended up in the Yukon, in Alaska.”

Myers had been journaling on the trips, but then he realized maybe there could be more to it than that.

“I was taking the outdoor stories and applying spiritual principles with them,” he explained. “All along the way, I would always include things that I had learned. My own insights.”

Friends and family told him he should turn his insights into a book, so he thought he’d give it a shot.

“I love the outdoors,” he said. “Hunting, fishing, kayaking, backpacking, whatever. I just like being outside.”

He said outdoorsy people will understand where he’s coming from.

“Some people speak Spanish, some people speak French, some people speak outdoors,” Myers said. “That’s their language.”

He added his own experience with being in nature.

“When you are out in nature, and you are surrounded by beauty, and it’s quiet, all of a sudden, you can hear God whisper to you in that environment, when it’s not noisy and crazy and the chaos of life is surrounding you,” Myers said. “These are the reflections that came out of that moment.”

“This isn’t work for me,” Myers added. “This is just really fun.”
