ALPENA — The creativity of Alpena area residents will be on full display on July 4 at Starlite Beach during the annual Alpena News Sandcastle Contest.

Large and small sand displays, created by children, adults, individuals and teams, will line the shoreline of Thunder Bay; a must-see for people each Independence Day.

The sandcastle contest began in 2014 and is a staple on a long list of must-attend events each Independence Day.

News Publisher and Editor Justin Hinkley said that, over the years, he has witnessed the building of many elaborate creations that consist of only sand, mud, water, twigs, grass, and other natural materials on the beach.

He said there have been Star Wars characters, Disney-themed displays, and other impressive works of art.

“They build just about anything you can think of and the people who come out to do this contest are really creative and put their skills on full display.” Hinkley said.

The sandcastle contest is just one of many events on July 4 in Alpena. From the parade in the morning to the fireworks display at night, Hinkley said there is no shortage of things for people to do, and he hopes people take time out of their day to include the event at the beach.

“The Fourth of July in Alpena is just a great time,” he said. “People are everywhere enjoying everything Alpena has to offer. One of the things they enjoy is the contest. People come to the beach, watch these things be built, take a swim, and just have a good time.”

There are several categories participants will be judged in, including the People’s Choice Award that is voted on by people who drop by the beach to see the displays.

Hinkley said prizes will be awarded in several divisions. He said one division is for kids 11 years old and younger, another for one to five builders, and another for six or more builders. Prizes will be awarded to those who place first, second, and third.

Although sand is the primary material used in the art, Hinkley said any number of items found on the beach can be used. He said the rules don’t forbid props made of plastic, rubber or other materials to be used, but the point system rewards the artists who rely solely on natural materials and items in their display.

“They are judged on use of natural resources, so they should be scored higher if everything they incorporate are natural resources,” he said.

The contest begins at 8 a.m. and wraps up in the afternoon. Hinkey said anyone who wants to enter the contest can do so at The Alpena News tent on the beach.
