ALPENA — Jeff Morrison, author of one of the state’s 2023 Michigan Notable Books, will visit Alpena on June 22, the state announced today.
Morrison, author of “Guardians of Michigan: Architectural Sculpture of the Pleasant Peninsulas,” will visit the Alpena County Library, 211 N. 1st Ave., Alpena, at 6 p.m. June 22, the Michigan Department of Education said in a news release.
Morrison “spent years exploring Michigan’s largest cities and smallest towns, using telephoto photography to capture the sculptural details hidden from the naked eye, and researching the beautiful historic architecture he encountered,” the Education Department said.
Each year, the Notable Books program picks 20 books published in the previous calendar year that showcase the state’s “diverse ethnic, historical, literary, and cultural experiences,” according to the news release. Fifty libraries across the Upper and Lower peninsulas will host Notable Books authors this spring and summer.
“One of the great aspects of the Michigan Notable Books program is connecting authors with people across Michigan, especially in communities that don’t always have opportunities to meet with high-caliber writers,” State Librarian Randy Riley said in a statement. “It’s wonderful to hear the conversations at these author events as each title celebrates the uniqueness of life in Michigan.”
Sponsors of the Michigan Notable Books program and author include the Library of Michigan, Library of Michigan Foundation, Michigan Humanities, Michigan Center for the Book, and others.
