OSSINEKE — The Alpena Community College softball team rounded out its home opening weekend with an impressive sweep against Bay College.
After taking three games from the Norse between Friday and Saturday, the Lumberjacks (13-9) came prepared on Sunday and took the final two games by scores of 5-4 and 17-14.
ACC softball officially has settled down at a newly remodeled field in Ossineke after bouncing around to several locations over the past few years.
“It’s absolutely amazing that we officially have our own home field and we are currently undefeated on it winning all five games. It’s super exciting because most of the games were back and forth but our girls kept fighting and it was awesome for us to come out on top,” ACC coach Christin Sobeck said.
In the top of the first inning of game one, Jade Schultz worked her way out of a bases-loaded jam and ACC immediately capitalized and took the lead. A walk from Maddy Wilkinson and a single from Makayla Kamyszek put two runners on perfectly for Schultz. After a wild pitch and a sac fly from Schultz, ACC jumped out to a 2-0 lead.
Bay College remained scoreless until the top of the third inning when Ellie Miller blasted a ball over the fence for a home run.
Just an inning later the Norse tied the game and even took a 3-2 lead. A double from Avery Sorochan and a sac fly from Sierra Jones knocked in both of the runs.
The Norse extended its lead by another run after a triple was hit by Lexi Kacalo, who later scored.
ACC’s offense continued to struggle and leave runners on base until the bottom of the seventh inning. With the game on the line, Kamyszek and Schultz got on base, which left Paige Wooden the perfect opportunity to score both runners. Wooden did just that by hitting a line drive single to left field.
Going into extra innings, the Lumberjacks had all of the momentum. A double from Breya Domke set up a runner in scoring position for a walk-off single from Kamyszek giving ACC the 5-4 win.
Although the Lumberjacks ended up winning both games, game two was much different than the first. The second game was full of offensive power from both sides which made for another outstanding game between both teams.
Bay came out in the first inning looking for revenge and tacked on three runs early to take a 3-0 lead.
ACC responded right back with five runs of its own after nearly every hit was a line drive. Kamyszek, Schultz, Wooden, Avery Zipp, and Abby Platt all came around to score at the bottom of the first.
Bay regained the 7-5 lead after scoring another three runs on a double from Jones and a two-run home run by Rachael Winkel.
The Lumberjacks’ offense kept fighting back and even took the lead once again in the bottom of the second. Another three runs were scored, coming from Wilkinson, Schultz, and Kamyszek again.
The pitching between both sides continued to fall apart as the Norse took the lead back for the third time within the first three innings. Two more runs were scored making it a 9-8 game still only into the top of the third.
This time, ACC was unable to score and Bay extended its lead to 10-8.
During the bottom of the fourth inning, ACC tied the game up after a home run from Zipp and another run from Lampinen.
The game continued back and forth until the bottom of the fifth when ACC took a massive lead. Seven more runs were scored off of Natalie Belanger coming from Kamyszek, Schultz, Wooden, Domke, Lampinen, Wilkinson, and Kyra Lucas. Schultz drove in Kamyszek on a two-run home run to deep right field.
Despite the fact that Bay College scored another three runs in the final inning, it was enough to complete the comeback, and ACC took the 17-14 victory.
The Lumberjacks previously defeated Bay College 6-1 on Saturday and 10-0 and 8-6 on Friday.
ACC hosts Mid Michigan College for five games over three days starting on Friday.
