ALPENA — Another hot shooting night meant another easy win for the Alpena High hockey team.
Reid Meinhardt and Harrison Kaszubowski each scored twice and the Wildcats rolled past Traverse City West 6-0 on Friday at Northern Lights Arena.
Cam Young and Anden Marceau each added a single tally for Alpena (20-3). Aidan Schultz turned aside six shots for his seventh shutout of the year and 16th win of the season.
With the win, Alpena reached 20 wins in a season for the 10th time in program history, joining the 1977-78, 1980-81, 1981-82, 1983-84, 1984-85, 1987-88, 1996-97, 2006-07 and 2018-19 Alpena teams.
“It’s been fun. In my opinion we just outwork everybody…after the first couple shifts the floodgates were open,” Alpena coach Ben Henry said.
In a game that got chippier by the period, Alpena took care of business on the offensive end and kept West goaltender Mason West busy all night. Alpena outshot West 41-6 for the game.
After a series of near-misses on rebounds — including a shot where the goal horn sounded after the shot hit the post — Alpena finally found the net late in the first period.
Meinhardt banged in a rebound with 1:28 left. He connected again 20 seconds later, giving Alpena a 2-0 lead.
Alpena outshot West 16-2 for the period and kept building momentum from there.
Young connected on the power-play with 5:35 left in the second period, burying a shot over West’s shoulder on a pass from Marceau.
A short time later, Kaszubowski scored the first of his two goals when he beat West on the short side with traffic in front of the net.
Marceau banged in a rebound before the end of the middle frame to build Alpena’s lead to a commanding 5-0.
Kaszubowski lit the lamp one more time in the third period, beating West through the five-hole during 4-on-4 play.
Alpena wraps up the regular season next week with two Big North Conference games. The Wildcats play at Cadillac on Wednesday and host Traverse City Central next Friday in a matchup that should decide the outright conference title winner.
The Wildcats previously defeated both teams 7-1 and 4-1 on consecutive nights in mid-December.
