ALPENA — The Michigan State Police urges residents to prepare for dangerous travel over the holiday weekend by preparing their homes and vehicles now.

The National Weather Service expects blizzard conditions in the Lower Peninsula Friday through Saturday, with wind gusts between 40 and 50 miles per hour and gusts over 60 miles per hour possible at times.

Drivers who can’t stay home should take the following precautions, according to the State Police:

* Carry salt, sand, a shovel, food, and blankets

* Check antifreeze and windshield-washing fluid levels

* Keep tires at the car manufacturer’s recommended pressure and the fuel tank nearly full

* Share destination, route, and expected arrival time before driving in bad weather

Motorists should check travel conditions and weather reports before driving. Major road closures can be found at michigan.gov/MiDrive. Additional resources can be found at michigan.gov/RoadConditions.

The State Police also recommends residents keep an emergency supply kit in their home during strong winter weather, including a three-day supply of food and water, a battery-powered or hand-crank weather radio, blankets, flashlights with extra batteries, and emergency contact information.
