Fireworks hours, rules announced

Alpena residents and visitors can light up the Fourth of July with fireworks from now until late Monday, according to Alpena city ordinance.

City rules mirror state law, which allows consumer fireworks use from 8 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. June 29 through July 4.

Fireworks may not be ignited without the permission of the property owner and may not be used by people under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances, according to city ordinance, which also prohibits the use of consumer fireworks on city property, including parks and beaches.

Fire officials urge those igniting their own fireworks to keep water nearby, keep children and pets away from fireworks, and discard malfunctioning fireworks rather than trying to re-light them.
