Local athletes break records, earn all-state honors at track finals

ROCKFORD — Cooper Bright did it again.

The Alpena High senior broke his own record in the 400 meter dash Saturday at the Division 1 state track and field finals with a blazing time of 49.76 seconds.

The time earned Bright seventh place in the event and all-state honors as a top-eight finisher. He had previously set a new Alpena record in the 400 dash on Tuesday of 49.84 seconds.

Alpena senior Madi Szymanski had a record-setting day as well. She earned all-state honors after finishing seventh in the 3,200 run (10:35.76) and set a new school record in the event, shattering the old mark by 15 seconds.

Alpena junior Elijah Allen took 17th in the boys 300 hurdles (41.88).

At the Division 4 finals in Hudsonville, a pair of athletes combined for five all-state medals.

Onaway sprinter Madilyn Crull earned a pair of all-state finishes after taking third in the 100 dash (13.04 seconds) and eighth in the 200 meter dash (27.96). Alcona’s Kelsey Hansen was a triple honoree, finishing fifth in the shot put (35-4), eighth in the long jump (15-6 1/2), and eighth in the discus (102-4)

BOYS

Alcona’s Garrett Somers in the 200 dash (prelims 14th, 23.79); Alcona’s Garrett Somers in the 200 dash (prelims, 19th, 23.96); Onaway’s Jadin Mix in the 300 hurdles (13th, 42.91); Alcona’s 800 relay team of Somers, William Liebler, Jeremiah Bullis and Hunter Rigby (21st, 1:39.44); Alcona’s Hayden Johnston in the shot put (25th, 36-7); Onaway’s Xavier Santiago in the high jump (9th, 5-11) and Bullis in the pole vault (10-3).

GIRLS

Crull in the high jump (15th, 4-10); Onaway’s 400 relay team of Crull, Charlotte Box, Lainey Shimel and Kailyn George (55.98) and Posen’s Lizzy Romel in the 100 hurdles (prelims, 15th, 17.75).

BASEBALL

Alpena stymied by Mt. Pleasant

MOUNT PLEASANT — The Alpena baseball team’s time in the district was short after an 11-4 loss to Mt. Pleasant in a Division 1 district semifinal Saturday.

Alpena held a 4-2 after three innings, but the Oilers scored nine runs over the next three innings to win.

Jake Zann had two hits and scored a run for Alpena. Logan Momrik had a double and 2 RBI.

Alcona wins district title

WHITTEMORE — A six-run first inning was enough to propel Alcona to a district title on Saturday with a 6-4 win over Au Gres.

Alcona took advantage of a few Au Gres errors in the first inning and tacked on several runs on an RBI double from Ricky Schott.

Gavin Walker had two hits for the Tigers and Collin Walker, Nathan Nardi and Jesse Sheldon each had an RBI. Owen Borsvold allowed four runs on seven hits, struck out seven and walked one.

Alcona defeated Mio 4-1 a semifinal earlier in the day. The Tigers scattered 5 hits and Collin Walker, Evan Borsvold and Owen Borsvold each had a hit and an RBI.

In Hillman, Johannesburg-Lewiston won a district title after defeating Rogers City 9-5 in the district final. The Cardinals topped Onaway 17-2 (3 innings) in one semifinal and Rogers City defeated Atlanta 16-0 (3 innings) in the other semifinal.

SOFTBALL

Alpena falls in district final

TRAVERSE CITY — Alpena’s quest for a district title ended with a 13-5 loss to Traverse City Central on Saturday in a Division 1 district final.

Alpena led 5-4 after five innings, but the Trojans scored nine runs in the final two innings.

Macy Schram had two hits and two RBI for the Wildcats and Izzy Edmonds and Avery Dubey each had two hits and an RBI.

Alpena defeated Mount Pleasant earlier in the day 6-5.

Alcona won a district title on its home field, dominating Au Gres 19-4 in four innings. The Tigers previously beat Hale 17-0 (3 innings) in a semifinal.

In Hillman, the host Tigers claimed their second straight district title after defeating Joburg 8-4. The Tigers outdueled Rogers City 7-6 in 8 innings in the first of two semifinals to end Rogers City’s streak of nine consecutive district titles.
