Toy drive coordinators concerned by bare shelves

ALPENA — The Vietnam Vets Toys for Kids drive needs more toys on its shelves, coordinator Tammy Kish reported on Thursday.
About 450 families have signed up to receive gifts, but the drive is short toys for 200 of those families, Kish reported.
Organizers especially need puzzles, crafts, books, and stuffed animals. Donors have dropped off plenty of hats, but she needs gloves to go with them, Kish said.
Gifts for hard-to-shop-for teens and tweens could include hair products, tool sets, radios, bath product or lotion product sets, or purses, she suggested.
Donors may drop off toys and other items at the drive’s headquarters, next to the former Nieman’s Family Market store in the Thunder Bay Shopping Center in Alpena, any day through Christmas between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.
“You gotta do what it takes,” said Kish, who will spend most of the rest of December at the headquarters. “These kids gotta have a Christmas.”
