ALPENA — About 125 runners and walkers supported local children by spending their Thanksgiving morning participating in the 19th annual Dork Brothers Turkey Trot 5K Run/Walk in Alpena.

Participation fees netted nearly $2,000, which will purchase warm clothes, blankets, and other necessities for local children, according to Joe Gentry, executive director of United Way of Northeast Michigan.

Of the 350 children on this year’s list, 40 still need sponsors willing to purchase three needed items this Christmas season, Gentry said. Interested donors should contact the United Way of Northeast Michigan at 989-354-2221 by Dec. 3 to be matched with a child.
