PREP ROUNDUP: Alpena softball, baseball teams top Tawas

Alpena sweeps Tawas

TAWAS — The Wildcats hit three home runs on the way to taking a doubleheader from Tawas on Monday, 4-1 and 10-9.

Keely Dahl and Elysa Kelley shared pitching duties for Alpena in both games.

In the opener, Sydney Hitzelberger had a home run and three RBI while going 3-for-4; Kyra Lucas had two hits and scored a run.

In the second game, Tawas scored two in the top of the first inning, but Alpena’s first four batters all scored and the Wildcats built an early 7-2 lead.

Allie DeRocher was 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI; Lucas had a home run and Hitzelberger and Marah Wisniewski each had two hits.

Alpena hosts Traverse City Central on Tuesday.

Posen topples Cardinals

The Vikings made quick work of Whittemore-Prescott on Monday, topping the Cardinals 17-0 and 16-0.

In the opener, Makayla Kamyszek threw a one-hit shutout with six strikeouts and two walks. At the plate, Abi Schellie had two hits and three RBI; Ava Wesner had a hit and four RBI and Hailey Styma had a hit and two RBI.

In the second game, Lizzy Romel threw a one-hit shutout and struck out three. At the plate, Wesner and Faith Cousins both had home runs and three hits each. Kamyszek and Romel each had two hits and Cousins finished with four RBI.

Hillman routs Hale

HALE–The Hillman softball team got back above. 500 on Monday with 19-2 (three innings) and 15-0 (three innings) wins over Hale.

In the opener, Nicole Barbeau struck out 11 of the 14 batters she faced before Brook Bennett came on for an inning of relief.

At the plate, Saige Flaugher was 2-for-5 with a triple; Barbeau was 2-for-5; Cassidy Benac was 4-for-5 with an inside-the-park home run, two doubles and a triple; Melanie Morrison was 2-for-4 and Julia Taratuta was 2-for-3 with a triple.

In the second game, Barbeau struck out six of the 12 batters she faced.

Flaugher was 1-for-3; Morrison had a double; Bennett was 1-for-3 and Jessica Jones and Taratuta each had a double.

Hillman (13-12, 6-0 North Star League) hosts Au Gres on Thursday.

Alcona splits with Mio

Alcona split a doubleheader with Mio on Monday, winning 15-9 and losing 15-14.

In the opener, Sage Gauthier led Alcona with three hits and two RBI. Olivia Borchardt pitched a complete game, striking out five.

In the second game, Mio led 7-4 after one inning and 11-4 after two. Alcona scored three runs between the third and fourth innings to make it 11-7 and when scored seven in the top of the fifth to take a 14-11 lead. Mio scored two runs each in the last two innings to take the game.

Anna Loyer led Alcona with three hits and Borchardt and Gauthier each had two hits. Borchardt threw another complete game, striking out four.

BASEBALL

Wildcats take 2 from Braves

TAWAS–The Wildcats topped Tawas in a doubleheader Monday 13-8 and 12-1.

In the opener, the Braves led 6-2 after five innings, but Alpena scored nine runs in the seventh to win.

Logan Momrik and Jake Zann had three hits each for the Wildcats and Alex Cadarette, Matt Thompson, Charlie Williams and Kadyn Budnik each had two hits. Budnik, Ryan Lee, Cadarette and Travis Weide each had two RBI.

In the second game, Zann and Noah Marquardt combined to allow a run on two hits with seven strikeouts.

Luke Tucker, Alex Cadarette and Matt Thompson each had two hits and Thompson had two home runs.

Hillman defeats Hale

HALE–Hillman took a pair of games from Hale Monday, beating the Eagles 9-5 and 10-0.

In the opener, Jaden Dove earned the win for Hillman (14-9-1, 4-0 North Star League), allowing four runs (one earned) on two hits with six strikeouts and three walks.

At the plate, Sean Henigan was 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI; Aden Sobeck, Zak Kazyaka and Owen Moulton all had a hit and scored a run.

In the second game, AJ Jones threw a perfect game for Hillman, striking out 11 in five innings.

At the plate, Trenton Taratuta was 1-for-3 with two runs scored; Jones was 1-for-2 with a double, a run scored and an RBI; Brady Firman was 2-for-3 with a run scored; Sobeck had a hit an scored twice; Kazyaka had a hit and three RBI; Dove was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI and Caleb Hiveley had two RBI.

Hillman hosts Au Gres on Thursday.

Alcona splits with Mio

The Tigers split a North Star League doubleheader with Mio on Monday, winning 4-3 and losing 12-2 by mercy rule.

In the opener, Jacob Sytek earned the win for the Tigers (5-6). Collin Walker was 2-for-4, Michael Basner was 2-for-3 and Jakob Tanner was 1-for-3 with a double.

Alcona and Mio were tied 2-2 after five innings in the nightcap before the Thunderbolts pulled ahead.

Basner was 2-for-2 with four stolen bases; Walker was 1-for-1 and Zach Stephenson was 1-for-3.

Alcona hosts Posen on Wednesday.

Posen loses to Hale

Posen had a rough day on Monday, losing 16-2 to Hale.

Anton Strzelecki, Lucas Stone, Trenton McCormick and Joey Konieczny each had a hit for Posen and McCormick and Chase Dubie each had an RBI.

JV BASEBALL

Alpena cruises past Tawas

The Alpena JV baseball team controlled play during a home doubleheader with Tawas on Monday, beating the Braves 22-7 and 17-7.

In the opener, Alpena scored 15 runs in the first inning and led 15-3 after one turn at the plate.

At the plate, Marc Kirchner, Grant Jarema, Jon Rensberry and Tucker Bright each had two hits and Rensberry and Bright each had three RBI.

In the second game, Alpena scattered seven hits, including a double from Landen Spomer.
